Alex Salmond’s Alba Party is to draw up legislation for a referendum about Scottish independence.

An independent Scotland would need its own currency before joining the European Union (EU), a think tank has said after the SNP published its latest blueprint for breaking up Britain.

The Scottish government has published its plans for European Union membership in an independent Scotland.

An independent Scotland would “comprehensively reject” Westminster’s hostile approach to immigration and welcome more migrants in order to boost the economy, ministers have said.

Last Sunday, the SNP party agreed an independence strategy based on winning the majority of seats – at least 29 – in Scotland at the next general election.

SNP delegates have backed Humza Yousaf’s plan to use the next general election result to push for a second independence referendum. An amended version of the strategy was voted through overwhelmingly at the party’s annual conference in Aberdeen.

There was a widespread assumption that the report by Gordon Brown’s Commission on the UK’s Future would aim to relieve pressure for a further referendum by offering Scotland a more attractive alternative to independence. However, the report is not really focused on Scotland.
