Myanmar’s military regime – which seized power in a 2021 coup – has extended the state of emergency serving to uphold its rule for another six months, as civil war rages in the country.

Foreign ministers of the Southeast Asian regional bloc ASEAN on Saturday condemned violence against civilians in military-ruled Myanmar and urged all parties to end hostilities and follow an agreed peace plan.

Fighting broke out in northeast Myanmar on Tuesday as a five-month ceasefire brokered by China between junta forces and ethnic minority insurgents fell apart, with clashes including air strikes by military jets, residents of the area told Radio Free Asia.

Seven of the 10 ethnic armed organizations that signed the 2015 Nationwide Ceasefire Agreement have formed a new alliance to continue peace talks with the regime, following a meeting of representatives of the organizations in the Thai city of Chiang Mai on Sunday and Monday.

Myanmar’s escalating violence and shift in support from neighbouring countries are heightening tensions, with armed groups gaining victories against the Tatmadaw and regional powers adjusting their stance towards the conflict.

Representatives discussed strengthening a ceasefire and reopening the border with China, an Arakan Army official said.

Potential conscripts fear they could be forced to carry out atrocities or be used as human shields by the military.

Myanmar’s opposition National Unity Government (NUG) has denounced the military’s announcement that it will begin enforcing a 2010 military conscription law, vowing to resist its implementation.
