Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has pressed on with his shuttle diplomacy to achieve a ceasefire in Ukraine, visiting Beijing on Monday after passing through Kyiv and Moscow.

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban met Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow, with no mandate from the European Union. Afterwards, Putin said that they discussed the situation in Ukraine, but reiterated that Moscow’s peace proposals should be key to any negotiations.

NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg on Friday shot down growing calls in the U.S. to force Ukraine to give up land or future NATO membership in return for Russian leader Vladimir Putin ending the war.

After two years of war, the Ukrainian leader appears to be taking peace talks seriously.

Viktor Orban arrived in Ukraine on Tuesday for an unannounced visit having just taken over as rotating president of the European Union. While in Kyiv, the Hungarian prime minister said a ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine could speed up negotiations to end the war.

Ukrainian president says as the war rages and casualties mount, a plan to end the 28-month conflict is ‘the diplomatic route we are working on’.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said a security agreement to be inked between Kyiv and the European Union on Thursday would advance “peace and prosperity” across the continent.
