It was the moment Europeans and Ukrainians have been dreading for months, if not years. Yet when it finally came, on a wintry afternoon as Kyiv froze, the suddenness and scale of Donald Trump’s peace plan still left Ukraine’s allies in shock.

Plan includes potentially freezing the conflict and the territory occupied by Russia while assuring Ukraine with security guarantees.

Keith Kellogg, Mr Trump’s special envoy for Ukraine and Russia, said the elections could take place by the end of the year, adding such votes “need to be done”.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said Tuesday that his country could hold peace talks with Ukraine, but ruled out speaking directly with President Volodymyr Zelensky, whom he called “illegitimate”.

Addressing the World Economic Forum, the US president pledged to apply pressure on OPEC, claiming that a drop in the price of oil would end Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

With Russia wearing down Ukraine’s stretched forces and new U.S. President Donald Trump pressuring the two sides to end their nearly 3-year-old war, Kyiv and some of its European allies are discussing how that might be achieved in a way that would guarantee Ukraine’s future security.

Donald Trump has warned he will impose high tariffs and further sanctions on Russia if Vladimir Putin fails to end the war in Ukraine.
